Can I superglue this?

Basket pipe. Good smoker and want it fixed, but not really worth sending in. Tried to Gorilla glue it, and it worked, until I ran a pipe cleaner through it after a smoke and it fell apart (Gorilla glue doesn't like heat I guess?). Think superglue might help? Sorry for the crap quality of picture.

Give the super glue a try. I use Loctite brand. You have nothing to lose. If that doesn't work, try epoxy.

Try using a short piece of tubing and superglue?

If super glue doesn't work.. There's always JB weld... I don't know what the chemicals in it would be like for smoking but, the pipe will fall apart before the JB weld ever lets go...

Pity, it seems the tenon has broken off clean in the shank. Would a replacement stem be an option for you? Carefully drilling out the tenon and replacing the stem seems like a much more attractive option to me than superglue. But then, I am certainly not an authority on pipe repair and restoration. Does anyone else out there have any ideas?

I would find a drill bit JUST bigger than the hole in the stem - screw it in until it bites, then pull out while continuing to turn it. With luck and brute force you should be able to extract the broken piece. Once that's done, you can use Liquid Crazy glue to mend the stem -- it's a beast to get it lined up right, and to keep it that way until sets, but once done, and set hard (24 hours) you can sand down any overspill, maybe sand down the tenon a touch, and you should be good for years!

I think Dallas has the right idea. I'm not a big fan of super glue, but if I was faced with such a conundrum, that's probably what I'd try. You don't want to glue the stem to the stummel anyway, as there will surely come a time when you want to remove it for cleaning, and trying to glue different materials together doesn't usually work as well, as they expand and contract at different rates when subjected to heat and/or humidity, stressing the glue joint. Vulcanite will likely bond with the superglue better than briar in any event. It is a basket pipe, and if all else fails, you could scrap it and go buy a cob.

Or if you really liked it, send it out for repair. I think the going rate is @$25.00 +/-

My limited experience with superglue is that it fails when subjected to heat and moisture so it's not likely to hold up under the conditions a stem has to endure.

I've never had to glue a stem - my experience is limited to gluing a crack in a mortise, and it's worked very well so far.

What about installing a delrin tenon?
