Count me out. Mixture 79 is absolutely the worst tobacco I have ever smoked, reminds me of a pipeful of old lady's perfume. Smokey
I'm almost curious enough to take the plunge. I may have to add M79 to my next TAD. After all, I did somehow survive Paladin.
Is M79 in the same ball park as Borkum Riff Whiskey, cause if it is, I'll be abstaining. I still have flash backs that remind me why I quit pipe smoking back in '92 and didn't pick it up again until 6 months ago..lol
Mix 79 smells like licorice in the pouch but it tastes like soap and smells like cheap perfume when it is smoked. By comparison, Borkum Riff is great stuff. The only stuff worse than Mix 79 is Paladin or Captain Black.
Ha Ha Ha!!! yeah, I think it's silly too. At a certain point you think, "these tobaccos have been around a long time. They must sell it. I wonder why." In the end I think there isn't an answer. At least, no obvious one. I think PA and CH blow all of these away. Heck, for the price of borkum riff, you can buy many of the Mac Baren's. Wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy better in my opinion. So why? As far as that dinner goes.... what's for dessert?
Dessert depends on what you pick up next. If you try Briggs, dessert is dust-encrusted pigeon toes. A lot of the better old OTC's were discontinued not because people didn't like them but because of marketing and/or production problems. A lot of the old House of Windsor blends were very good (Briggs excepted) - much better than M79 or Borkum Riff. And of course there's Edgeworth. But yeah, people do buy those blends you mentioned, and I've tried them as well. Currently finishing up a tin of Field & Stream... or Mixture 79 Lite as I call it. The "lite" part actually works - it's not nearly as vomitous as M79. Not anything I could smoke more of but at least it's not nauseating.
It is a mystery. I grew up on Argosy Black. I actually found a big tin of it a while back and have been waiting to crack it open. It was pretty good stuff when I was 15... and it certainly would make a better dessert than dust-encrusted pigeon toes!! LOL!
Yeah... I'd heard the borum riff whiskey was acceptable... I think it's the cavendish component that tastes like pencil shavings. Aside from that it's "great". (note sarcasm)
That's one I haven't tried. Once you crack the tin, give us a review. I'm a little frightened of that one.
Thanks Ming but I'm waiting for a special occasion to crack the tin open. I'll let you know when I do.
Maybe....just maybe...... all these negative reviews of Borkum Riff and Mixture 79 are covert attempts of the government to deprive us of high quality tobacco?? Ever think of that? Better be careful Ming, Big Brother is watching you now that youre letting the secret out of the bag!!!
