Pen Pipe Tamper

Alright PSF! Its time for some talented individuals to come out!

Bluepipe has an idea for a pen tamper. I can do all parts of the pen except a brass end for the tamper part. The diameter doesnt need to be bigger than the pen on this one, but if the diameter is bigger for others I wont mind.

So heres the request. I need somebody with a machinist lathe to make this brass end cap. Or someone who can tell me how to do it on a wood lathe.

    Any ideas, takers, suggestions!?!?

Bluepipe, if it can be done by one of our talented generous members, I will GIVE you this pen for free (except shipping), I just want to say I had a hand in it.

Or, has anyone seen such a thing already?

Ok diagram below, I know its rough but I did it in paint.

I would be interested in procuring one but that is about as much help as I can be. :D

Yes, interesting project if you have problems finding someone with capabilities to do that one, brass upholstery nails may provide a "work-a-round"

More than one way to skin a cat, and I don't even like cat ;-)

    I love a well trimmed cat. ;)

Well, it would need to be durable and nice looking...I can see handing out the replace furniture tacks with each pen...

Pens are press fit, thats why the smaller end would have to be 7mm to 10mm, to press fit into a 7-10 brass tube...

    Neat idea for sure!

I normally refer to those a kittys, even well trimmed will tickle your nose.....

I can do something like that. However,
you may find something already made
    in a pen kit.

Ah! Amigo! I was wondering when youd slither in!! Just the man I was thinking of...

Most of these pen kits have a flatish type of cap, but I was thinking something of solid brass, for durability and finish, as the plating on most of these pen kits would flake/bubble off after a few "hot dips" into a toby chamber...

I was thinking of something like this...but with a pen stuck on it (brass part only, notice how smooth, flat, and rounded it is)...

I would go look at your tamps snake but work is blocking them...your ends would probably suffice...do you hav ethem showing anywhere else?

    Archer,
You may be right about the plating.
I have some brass stock that's .5 inch
in diameter, and can turn it to those
specs. Is the centre of the insert hollow
or solid? Has the end diameter been
    determined?

The only thing that comes to mind is an empty shell casing - as we've all seen done before on tampers.

Something like this could be machined maybe with some sheet metal and a spot welder (maybe??). I have also seen plain briar tampers. So maybe a thin cylindrical strip of briar stuck on top of the pen? I don't know, just throwing out ideas.

Archer, thanks for taking this up. I was worries that you might think this is stupid. Thanks a lot.

If this turns out to be a Snake - Archer collaboration it will be absolutely great!

    It already is!

I need for the larger side to be the same size as the larger diameter of these bushings:
    http://www.woodcraft.com/Product/20...Deluxe-Razor-and-Shaving-Brush-Stand-Kit.aspx

The reason being is that I think for look and function it would be better if it were wider at the top of the pen, tapering down the length (like a golf tee, it will look good, trust me), plus these bushing use the same drill bit that the pen kit I have in mind uses, 7mm.

So Snake to answer part of the question:

The whole piece can be solid. Needs to be 7mm on the small end. I will have to mic some measurements for these bushings, and the existing end cap of the pen kit for length of the tenon. I wont be able to do that until tomorrow evening. Unless you happen to live beside woodcraft and can go mic these bushings?

So sounds like a plan coming together, I would gladly pay you snake for your help, or you can make more bushings and i'll send you a pen too!

Nothing is stupid here...what good are we if we cant come together and pool our resources...

Shell casing would probably be the easiest method, bu twe've seen much discussion about how its been doen and beat to death...I want this thing to look like art...as opposed to a pen with a shell case arse stuck to it! No offense! Keep em coming though!

I was thinking a craggy rusticated finish using briar wood for the pen. Thoughts?
