I'm looking for a pipe to smoke at work. I work 12 hour shifts with a smoke break every hour, on the hour, for 10-15 mins. Obviously this isn't enough time to smoke an entire bowl, but time to get a few puffs in while people smoke cigarettes. Criteria would have to be: -pocket sized -durable enough to be in my pocket all day -good for lots of DGT'ing and relights -preferrably not gurggly -under $100 -e.t.c. An obvious choice would be a cob, and I have a few, but I don't really want to smoke them at work in front of a lot of people. Kind of looking at maybe a black, small, bent Kirsten Horizon. They won't leak juices, are durable, pocket sized, and can generally take a beating. But at the same time they look like pipes that have other uses, and that can be a con for use at work. Kind of like the Black Kirsten Horizon at the bottom of this page http://www.kirstenpipe.com/page_pipestyles.shtml The Savinelli Tortuga also looks nice. Has a cap to contain partially smoked bowl, so that they won't spill into pocket. Briar is a bonus as well. Might be a little too big lengthwise for this need though. http://www.smokingpipes.com/pipes/new/savinelli/moreinfo.cfm?product_id=82327 A bent bulldog may fit the bill as well. Pocket sized and ready to get smoked for a few minutes every hour. http://www.smokingpipes.com/pipes/new/savinelli/moreinfo.cfm?product_id=77945 What would you guys suggest for work smoking? any good DGT'ing pipes out there that won't make a mess in my pocket, and look nice?
Get a small bowl and some bulk Kendal Dark. The stuff is strong, tasty, and shag cut. You can finish a small bowl in 15 minutes and feel like you just had an hour long smoke. It's got a floral essence to it, but only slightly, and I don't find that it ghosts pipes the way Bosun Cut Plug or Best Brown Flake # 2 do, so you can throw something else in there if you want. But I'd suggest Kendal Dark or an OTC. Yes, cobs are the best choice, but if you want to try a briar I'd say find a cheap one with a small bowl and smoke it a few times to make sure it is worth even smoking. People speak very highly of Falcon for just what you're asking about, but I have no experience with them. I like the look of the Tortugas but haven't tried one because the cap is fitted with foam rubber, which makes me uneasy. Duca Carlo has smaller bowls than most Savinellis, and it's just about their most wallet-friendly line. Try this: http://www.smokingpipes.com/pipes/new/savinelli/moreinfo.cfm?product_id=85025 Also, Stanwell offers a ton of pipes with smaller bowls, especially in their Featherweights line. Give them a look, but most will be more expensive than the Duca Carlo so if something DOES happen to it you're out more money. Under 100 bucks usually, though.
I have w few Kirsten pipes, and the will do just what you want. The smoke great also! I am not sure how a wind cap fits, but would be willing to check it out for you. The upside to the Kirsten is you could s ole different Toby all day and not swamp the pipe. They are also very durable.
Have you considered a Military Mount? These were made so that the stem could be removed before the pipe was completely cooled. That might be something to consider.
BC makes some tiny little pipes that smoke well. There's also the Bent Bob's. Falcon makes Bantam sized bowls that are very small. Put some Brown Rope in there and you've got a pretty good nicotine hit. Plus, you'd look pretty cool shaving off slices of tobacco and putting them in your pipe.
http://www.smokingpipes.com/pipes/new/stanwell/moreinfo.cfm?product_id=82123 This little lightweight pot's chamber is just shy of an inch deep and just shy of .7 inches in diameter. If the quality of construction is anything like my little Stanwell, it should smoke great and be a perfect pocket pipe and a great clencher.
Thanks for all the replies everyone! Kirstens are looking nice, and have the interchangeable bowls which is nice. Will check out the BC's and the Stanwell featherweights, very good looking contenders as well, thanks guys
Here is my workplace pipe. Crummy picture aside, you get the hint. I like my Falcons better, but this medium Kirsten with a windcap is better suited to pocket duties. Well, better suited for my needs.
Ii was just coming back to say that my Kirsten bowl and my wind cap do not play nice, just tried. I have a different style wind cap somewhere, but it is currently MIA.
Big Ben pipes are pretty darn tough! The finish on it must be some kind of lacquer or something similar. Toss the filter and you'll have a pipe with a nice big open draw. Finished with a nice durable, virtually maintenance free acrylic stem. Big Bens Pipes - Premier Pipes Offers Pipes, Pipe Tobacco, and Accessories * I bought a handful of Pony Cobs a few days ago and they are now going to be my work pipes. I work from home though..... Hard to beat for $2.75 each. Stain it black and it just might escape the ridicule. Cobs get such a bum rap.
Not trying to sound cute, but the only commercially available ones I've seen. Iwan Ries has them in their catalog for $2. Mine came with this estate Kirsten, though, so I can't say they're identical with certainty. This wind screen fits the majority of my other burners, so it's fairly adaptable.
Lots of good ideas here, but I have to say I like the Tortuga, though I could see how the foam rubber might give one the willies. If you go that route, don't forget to leave the cap off and air it out overnight, lest it get swampy.
you might look at this-- Zeman has some good lookin' pipes--moderately priced-- this one is my favorite; i mean the one i want to buy soon-- http://www.zemanpipes.com/pipe.php?pipe_id=124
Those are some good looking pipes. Was too stupid to fin the order now button. My bank acct is okay with that.
Wouldn't the Kirsten lead folks to think you might be smoking that funny stuff? Most people would never have seen one of those.
I don't know what they would think at work, but I defy anyone to try and get a Kirsten past the TSA at the airport...
I smoked a Kirsten for years while working. My job required too much travel, all over America, Canada, Mexico and parts of south America. No problems, ever! Kirstens do perform as intended - can't say that about the Falcon. In our local Sheriff's department they have a display of confiscated drug apparatus that includes a Falcon pipe! No self- respecting drugie wound use anything but a cheap Falcon. Kirstens don't smoke dope well - or so I'm told. Will
