Stem snapped on my pipe... Superglue?

    Howdy!

I dropped my pipe on a tile floor, and the stem snapped cleanly into 3 pieces.

I decided yesterday to super-glue it back together; I placed a little dab of it on either side of the channel inside the stem, pressed the parts together, and let it set for a day... Then I realized that the stem might be subject to some heat, which could then of course create super-glue fumes, which I don't want to be taking into my body (obviously!).

I'm wondering if anybody else has used superglue to repair a stem before, if it's safe to use until I get a new stem, and what I should do if I can't find a local tobacconist who can't get me a new stem?

My pipe has Calabrest (which google informs me is a Calabresi factory second) stamped on the side, but I can't find a website for the manufacturer. Any help in that regard?

Super glue is worth a try for sure. Once it sets I don't think you have any issues about it being "contagious". Cyanoacrylic is fairly inert.

I don't know much about Calabresi pipes.

Well... the stem does not actually get exposed to that much heat. I mean... a stem becomes soft in boiling water, does your stem become soft when you smoke it? I wouldn't have recommended this but now that's it's done it's done. Let it sit for a couple days make sure its completely dry. Anyways, super glue is part of a family of glues that was first used as liquid stitches. So it is generally safe to use in and around open wounds. Although today's super glues are slightly different they're still generally safe. You should be okay but you know... I'm no doctors. I guess at worst you;'ll have a life-changing psychedelic experience.

Super glue goes directly onto cleaned wounds, direct contact with your blood stream.
Safe as houses to use it, though not if you're in an earthquake region, the glue is probably safer than your house. :)

By the way if you are gonna use superglue on a wound it has to be a clean cut. Pinch it closed then put the glue on the skin not in the actual wound. Just wanted to clear that up... I don't want people pouring superglue in their cuts haha.

    Hello, fellas!
I'm really surprised that you've all had such good experiences with fixing a stem with Superglue!
I've had broken tenons and other "accidents" before which needed professional repair, but not a broken stem as such....
However, it's comforting to know that Superglue works!!!:bing:

I did the same thing with a cheap estate from ebay. The stem was stuck and I twisted a little too hard and snapped it off right at the tenon. Glued it back up and had no problems since.

I just remembered ... I smoke a massive Wiley Pot Canadian that I drove over in my truck . It busted the long shank clean [luckily] and I repaired it w/ superglue then and there . I didnt have a choice at the time .. it was either glue it w/ super glue or not smoke that day . Anyway , that was at least 5 years ago and I smoke that pipe pretty often . It's held up , even on briar .
